Bookshelves to Die For, Pt. 3

August 8, 2023

Plenty of books and nowhere to put them? Fear not. I’ve been continuing my search and review of unique bookshelves: live or online. Here are a few more from architectureartdesigns.com. I’m finding that site ideal for a little daydreaming.

Curious Solutions

The “Rappeller.” No rocks involved here. This hanging-seat setup takes bookshelves to the extreme. A reader can experience a little adventure before selecting their adventure—in reading, that is. I imagine swinging from category to category in search of the ideal book escape—or perhaps it would just be fun swinging amongst the books.

Abstract design. This two-wall concept is eye-catching, immediately drawing attention, so maybe these coordinated bookshelves would be ideal for art-themed works or architecture textbooks. Some beloved Sci-Fi books could make the reserved-for cut on these shelves, too. Setting the books inside the cubbies of the circular shelf could challenge what little (or lot) you know about physics.

Using the Familiar

Guitar case. Certainly unique, this guitar case serving as a bookcase doesn’t hold many books. Perhaps it could be reserved for music-themed books only: how-to-play-an-instrument books or a mystery series centering around an opera or concert. The cover’s been removed, so this bookcase (not shelf, here) could hold books deemed special for quick and easy in-house transport.

Comma/Single Quote. You’d have to view this from a distance for a full-effect perspective. But a bookshelf in the shape of punctuation? Such a fitting design concept. I see classic tomes filling the curves and swirls of this bookshelf. From Ptolemy’s theories to works by Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, or Alice Walker—nothing but timeless stuff here. I prefer considering the design a comma: as with the purpose of the punctuation, the shape inspires a time to pause for some reading.

Odd-but-Cool

Boxes on Edge. Tilting and teetering atop each other, the precarious and quirky nature of these shelves calls for lots of science-fiction works. Or, if not Sci-Fi, maybe other science-related books such as those dealing with the laws of physics or gravity. Keeping on theme, this odd shelving could be dedicated to…nothing but works by Asimov.

Bookshelves are unique forms of expression for avid readers. My search for appealing, unusual bookcase formations continues. Stay tuned.

Back here in a bit. Stay serif.
